Shift handovers, medication schedules, shipping windows, server maintenance and “allow 48 hours” promises all need the same arithmetic: start at a moment, add some hours, and find out what the clock and the calendar say afterwards. Doing it in your head gets awkward when the total passes midnight or runs into a new weekday. This calculator takes a start date and time plus a number of hours and returns the exact result.

How to use the hours from now calculator

  1. Set the start date and time. Use the current time if you are counting from now.
  2. Enter the hours. Decimals work: 1.5 means 1 hour 30 minutes.
  3. Choose later or earlier to add or subtract.
  4. Read the result as a full date, weekday and 12-hour time, plus a 24-hour version and the span in days and hours.
Hours from now +0h +6h +12h +18h +24h Start time Result + N hours 1 hour = 60 minutes · 24 hours = 1 day calcmaple.com
Add whole hours to a start time; crossing midnight moves the result to the next date.

Hours from now formula

End time = start time ± hours × 60 minutes
Days = ⌊ hours ÷ 24 ⌋, leftover hours = hours mod 24

A day has 24 hours, so every full 24 hours moves the calendar date by exactly one day and leaves the clock time unchanged. Only the leftover hours change the time of day, and if they push it past 12 AM the date advances by one more day.

Worked example: 36 hours from 9:00 AM

  1. Split 36 hours: 24 + 12, which is 1 day and 12 hours.
  2. One day after Thursday, October 15, 2026 is Friday, October 16, still 9:00 AM.
  3. Add 12 hours: 9:00 AM + 12 h = 9:00 PM.
  4. Result: Friday, October 16, 2026 at 9:00 PM.

Where this comes up

  • Medication: a dose every 8 hours from 7:00 AM is due at 3:00 PM and 11:00 PM; some prescriptions give a window in hours.
  • Customer service promises: “reply within 48 hours” should be counted from the received time, not from the start of the day.
  • Cooking and curing: brines, dough proofing and slow smokes often run 12, 24 or 72 hours.
  • Travel: a flight that lands 14 hours after departure may cross a date line and time zones; add time zones separately.

Limits

This tool treats the clock as continuous. It does not apply daylight-saving changes or time-zone conversion, so for a span that crosses a clock change, adjust by one hour yourself. Use 24-hour time if you are unsure about AM and PM — the Military Time Converter translates between the two.

For minute-level changes use the Minutes From Now Calculator calculator, and to count whole days use Days From Date Calculator. If you are totalling shift lengths, the Hours Calculator and Time Card Calculator may suit better.

Frequently asked questions

What time is it 24 hours from now?

The same clock time on the next calendar day. Enter your start time, type 24 and the calculator will show the date and weekday as well.

What is 36 hours from now?

Add 1 day and 12 hours. For a start of 9:00 AM on October 15, 2026, 36 hours later is Friday, October 16, 2026 at 9:00 PM.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

The calculator works on the clock as written and does not shift for daylight-saving changes. If the span crosses a clock change, the real elapsed time differs from the clock difference by one hour.

Can I use fractions of an hour?

Yes. Enter 2.5 for two and a half hours (2 hours 30 minutes) or 0.25 for 15 minutes.

How do I find a time before another?

Choose “Earlier (subtract)”. For example, 10 hours before 8:00 AM is 10:00 PM the previous day.
