Picture-frame and shaker wainscoting looks right when the panels are all the same width and the vertical boards between them line up with the room. Because a wall is rarely an exact multiple of a nice panel size, you need a short calculation to adjust. This wainscoting layout calculator takes the wall length, stile width and the panel width you would like, and finds the whole number of panels and the exact panel width that fills the wall evenly.

How to use the wainscoting layout calculator

  1. Enter the wall length between the corners or casings you are filling.
  2. Enter the wainscoting height from the floor to the top of the cap rail.
  3. Enter the stile width: the vertical board between panels, usually 3 to 4 inches.
  4. Enter your target panel width, then read the whole-panel layout and the trim quantities.

Wainscoting layout formula

Wall length Panels n = round((wall − stile) ÷ (panel + stile)) Exact panel = (wall − (n + 1) × stile) ÷ n stile calcmaple.com
Wainscoting is a frame of stiles and rails; n panels need n + 1 stiles, and the panel width is whatever is left, divided equally.
Panels n = round( (wall − stile) ÷ (panel + stile) )
Exact panel width = (wall − (n + 1) × stile) ÷ n
Stiles = n + 1
Rails = 2 × wall (top and bottom)

The wall contains n panel openings and n + 1 stiles, including the two at the ends. Solving for the opening width gives the exact formula. Rounding the panel count to the nearest whole number keeps the exact width as close as possible to your target.

Worked example: a 12 ft wall, 3½ in stiles, 12 in target panels

  1. Wall length: 12 ft = 144 in. Panels: (144 − 3.5) ÷ (12 + 3.5) = 9.06, which rounds to 9 panels.
  2. Stiles: 9 + 1 = 10.
  3. Exact panel width: (144 − 10 × 3.5) ÷ 9 = 12.11 in.
  4. Stiles at 36 in tall: 10 × 3 ft = 30 linear ft; rails: 2 × 12 = 24 linear ft; total 54 linear ft of 1×4 style trim.

Design guidelines

  • Height. Roughly one third of the wall height is a classic proportion. Higher wainscot feels formal; lower feels casual.
  • Stile and rail widths. Rails are often the same width as stiles, or slightly wider at the bottom to look balanced against the baseboard.
  • Centering. On a wall with a focal point such as a window or fireplace, center a panel or stile on it, and then work outward.
  • Corners. Treat the stile at an inside corner as one wide piece, so that panels near corners do not look narrower.

Materials and finishing

Many installations use MDF or plywood sheets for the backer with solid or MDF strips for the frame; trim and cap rails are bought by the linear foot. Add 10% for cuts, caulk the joints, fill the nail holes and paint with a durable semi-gloss. Plan outlets and switches before cutting the backer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I space wainscoting panels evenly?

Pick a stile width and a target panel width, then compute the number of panels as (wall length − stile width) ÷ (panel width + stile width), rounded to a whole number. Recalculate the exact panel width so the stiles and panels fill the wall exactly.

How tall should wainscoting be?

A common design rule is about one third of the wall height, which is around 32 to 36 inches on an 8 ft wall. Chair-rail height is traditionally 30 to 36 inches. Taste and room proportions decide.

What are stiles and rails?

Stiles are the vertical boards between panels and rails are the horizontal ones at the top and bottom (and sometimes the middle). Together they form the frame of each recessed panel.

Does the layout include corners and outlets?

No. Treat each wall separately and adjust for door and window casings. Plan the layout so a stile lands beside windows and doors, and keep outlets within a panel opening where possible.

Why does the exact width differ from my target?

A wall rarely divides into whole panels of your target width. The calculator rounds to a whole panel count and adjusts the panel width slightly so the spacing is equal across the wall.
