Job offers quote salaries, but many decisions are easier in hourly terms: comparing a salaried role with an hourly one, pricing freelance work, or seeing what extra unpaid hours really cost you. This calculator divides an annual salary by the hours you actually work and shows the result for every common pay period.

How to use the salary to hourly calculator

  1. Enter the annual salary before taxes.
  2. Enter your hours per week. Use your real average if you regularly work more than your contract says.
  3. Enter paid weeks per year. 52 if your vacation and holidays are paid.
  4. Enter working days per week for the daily figure.

Salary to hourly formula

Hourly wage = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
Weekly pay = annual salary ÷ weeks per year
Monthly = salary ÷ 12 · Semimonthly = salary ÷ 24 · Biweekly = salary ÷ 26

Biweekly and semimonthly are different: paid every two weeks you get 26 checks a year; paid twice a month you get 24 slightly larger checks.

$50,000 ÷ (40 h × 52 wk) = $24.04 an hour $50,000 a year ÷ 2,080 hours worked in the year Hourly rate by hours worked $24.04 (40 h/week) $21.37 (45 h/week) calcmaple.com
The same salary pays less per hour the longer you work: $50,000 over 2,080 hours is $24.04, but over 2,340 hours it is $21.37.

Worked example

A job pays $50,000 a year for 40 hours a week.

  1. Hours per year: 40 × 52 = 2,080
  2. Hourly: 50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04
  3. Monthly: 50,000 ÷ 12 = $4,166.67
  4. Biweekly: 50,000 ÷ 26 = $1,923.08

If the job actually takes 45 hours a week, the effective rate drops to 50,000 ÷ 2,340 = $21.37.

Salary to hourly table

40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, before taxes.

$30,000$14.42$1,153.85$2,500.00
$40,000$19.23$1,538.46$3,333.33
$50,000$24.04$1,923.08$4,166.67
$60,000$28.85$2,307.69$5,000.00
$75,000$36.06$2,884.62$6,250.00
$100,000$48.08$3,846.15$8,333.33

A quick mental shortcut: divide the salary by 2,000 for a slightly high estimate — $50,000 is about $25 an hour.

Comparing salaried and hourly jobs

  • Overtime. Hourly non-exempt workers in the US are generally paid 1.5× for hours over 40 in a week; exempt salaried workers are not.
  • Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and paid time off can be worth a lot; compare total compensation, not just pay.
  • Unpaid time. Contractors and many hourly workers are not paid for holidays or vacation — reduce weeks per year to compare fairly.

Effective hourly rate

Your effective hourly rate is what you really earn for each hour you give the job. Add commuting time, required after-hours email or on-call shifts to your weekly hours and the rate can fall noticeably. Example: $60,000 for a nominal 40-hour week is $28.85 an hour, but if the job takes 45 hours plus 5 hours of commuting, it is $60,000 ÷ (50 × 52) = $23.08 per hour of your time. It's a useful number when weighing a remote role, a shorter commute or a four-day week against a higher salary.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by the number of hours worked in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour.

What is $60,000 a year per hour?

About $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks. At 37.5 hours a week it is about $30.77.

Why 2,080 hours?

40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080. It is the standard figure for a full-time year with paid holidays and vacation. If you take unpaid weeks off, reduce the weeks.

Is this before or after taxes?

Before taxes. Federal, state and payroll taxes, plus deductions like health insurance and retirement contributions, reduce take-home pay.

Does hourly pay include overtime?

Salaried employees who are exempt from overtime don't earn more for extra hours, so working 50 hours a week lowers your effective hourly rate. Enter your real average hours to see it.
